This project explores the organization of typographic elements with an emphasis on visual principles within typographic forms, such as proportion, visual hierarchy, rhythm/texture, counterform, visual punctuation, and focal point. Through varied font sizes and styles, text could be altered to formulate visual hierarchy and rhythm within the piece. The overarching goal is to utilize typographic layout system and understand their utility to create legible typographic compositions.
In order to develop moving visual forms, margins, columns, gutters, flowlines should be considered. Experimenting with proportion, even and uneven, helps form an underlying structure and develop a method of organization. Visual hierarchy allows a strong focal point to lead the viewer to the design, with visual punctuation ranking the dominant and subdominant levels and providing a logical progression. Visual punctuation also utilizes rhythm to create a sense of movement to avoid a flat design and give texture. Importantly, counterform provides negative space to direct the eye to the focal point of the design. To adhere to the principles of type rules, keeping in mind kerning, rag, river, widows or orphans, indentation, and en dash assists in an overall aesthetically invigorating design.
Paper Sculpture Poster
A way to create masterfully diverse three-dimensional pieces of artwork that is not created digitally, analog, is through handcrafted paper sculpture. Manipulating pieces of cut and folded paper can bring forth intriguing forms through carefully applied rhythm and texture for a sense of movement and depth. Through patience and effort, unique sculptures can be taken to the next level when applying type. The finished paper sculptures were photographed under particular lighting sources to give depth and create natural highlights and shadows. Two separate paper sculptures, geometric and curvilinear were recreated, but with the type printed onto them, and rephotographed. The new photographs were then cropped and given colors to invigorate the design. The photos served as the first step for our posters. To craft a complete poster, it is important to keep in mind levels of informational hierarchy to organize content and make focal points of the designs. Utilizing grid systems implies proportion and harmony to create two standout typographic designs.
